Set in Birmingham after the First World War, Peaky Blinders follows the exploits and rise of Thomas Shelby and his gang. The drama and movie are loosely based on a real urban youth gang active in Birmingham from the 1880s to 1920.
There are high hopes for The Immortal Man as it picks up the story from season 6 of The Peaky Blinders, with fans theories abuzz on the plot of the film. Many believe the movie will follow Tommy as he navigates the socio-economic corridor, the politics, and his personal ambitions to fill the power void as Britain rebuilds from the devastation of the First World War. Steven Knight, the creator of the show and the film, has hinted at a possible story arc laced with historical events and the rise of fascism in England.
Cillian Murphy reprises his role as Thomas Shelby, bringing the character’s intensity and depth back to life. Alongside him, familiar cast members include Sophie Rundle (Ada Thorne), Paul Anderson (Arthur Shelby), Stephen Graham (Hayden Stagg), and Packy Lee (Johnny Dogs). Ian Peck also returns as Curly.
Fan theories are popping up on social media, fueled by images of Cillian Murphy with Barry Keoghan on the sets of The Immortal Man. This means we may see a new mysterious character in the film, adding another layer of excitement. As of December 2024, the filming is wrapped up, and fans can expect a release date from the producers in 2025.
It is a New Year’s treat to see the Shelby Boys in full action, draped in their double-breasted long coats, iconic flat caps, tweed suits, and club collar shirts. More than the storyline, Peaky Blinders is known to revive that vintage gangster chic vibe, allowing fans to experience fiction and reality firsthand.
The Immortal Man is penned by Stevan Knight, and it is a joint production of BBC Films, Banijay Entertainment, and Tiger Aspect Productions. Tom Harper returns to direct from season one, which means fans are in for a cinematic treat, as is Tom’s style of direction.
Now for the big scoop. There is a possibility that Tom Hardy, the famed Venom star and fans’ favorite from season 2, Alfie Solomons, might reprise his role in the movie too. If that happens, The Immortal Man will set very high expectations of delivering a true masterpiece of British crime and gangster saga. Tom Hardy also reprised his role in the series finale, so it is highly possible to have some screen time associated with his character in the film.
“My intention has always been to redeem him so that, in the end, he’s genuinely a good man doing good things,” said Steven Knight, talking about the “why” of this movie. Thomas Shelby is a character where the bad and the good are tangled tightly, coming from the heart, and that is why he is the most beloved character — everyone can relate to him in one’s personal struggle to determine what’s good or bad. The movie is about Tommy redeeming himself, and that premise is personal and very exciting for the fans.
Editor’s Note: I’m totally hyped for the film but Helen McCrory, who used to play Polly Gray, the gypsy godmother in the show, will be deeply missed. I’ll always feel that empty space in my heart no matter how great the film performs. In my mind, the story will always be incomplete without Polly.
